Review of 19th October Meeting
Special Pre-chapter Meeting Activity
This evening, we were graced by the presence of guest speaker Violet Lim, founder of Lunch Actually. Violet shared with us some insights on the brave beginnings of Lunch Actually, of the inspiration behind its founding, and of her taking the leap of faith, quitting her job and plunging in full time into the mission of bringing together compatible bachelors and bachelorettes. During the Q&A session, curious Toastmasters and guests eagerly posed questions about her business and on how Lunch Actually might cure ‘their friends’ or themselves, of their singlehood. Busy singles out there, if you are looking to find your other half, you know who to look to.
Lunch Actually was started in Singapore and now has a presence in Malaysia and Hong Kong.
Chapter Meeting
Word of the day
Vivacious (adj.): vibrant, vigorous, animated
Our very own Joshua Ho, CC, once again did us the honour of hosting the chapter meeting as our charming and vivacious toastmaster of the evening.
In his opening speech, our Club President Jeffrey Williams touched on the aspects of our needs and wants. Why it is important to attend a Toastmasters meeting with a positive mind. If we are able pick up and learn from the more proficient speakers, it will stand us in good stead for the future. Jeffrey touched base on the time when he joined Toastmasters on 24th January 2005. He did not know what was in store when he took his first step in his Toastmasters journey. Four and a half years later, he now knows that he made the right decision.
So the decision is up to us; nobody can force us to make a decision; it’s up to us and us alone. Take the plunge and join Toastmasters.
The table topics section
Table Topics Master Kee Chin Ho handed out a series of topics to do with current affairs. From our speakers, we heard their opinions and gained fresh insights on topics ranging from awarding Obama the Nobel Peace Prize, the causes of the financial crisis to investing in properties in developing countries.
The prepared speeches section
This evening saw Toastmasters Zack Kong and Clarence Lee take their first steps. Of an accident, a heartbreak and of the start of a very loving marriage, Zack spoke of these defining moments in his life. Clarence spoke of his awakening to life’s adventures, discovering his passion amidst a melting pot of cultures and of his decision to return to Singapore. Congratulations Clarence and Zack!
When it came to Hrydhal Damani’s turn, the audience plucked up their ears and listened attentively as she revealed the steps in the unfailing guide to unfaltering success. Wei Ching shed new light on sadness, the emotion, and on how we should embrace it rather than to run away from it. Following this, Simon Lee gave us an informative speech on the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the love sponge and its suitability for young families.
The evaluation section
Creativity seemed to be the order for this night’s evaluations. Swee Kiat startled us by starting with some surreal dog speech, while Sally Maier evaluated Hrydhal’s speech using Hrydhal’s own speech structure. We also saw Jasmine Vahdati do an awesome job in tabulating the ‘ah’, ’so’ and other non connective words.
We would like to thank Leong Kai Yan, CL from Singapore Recreation Club for the word of the day and for being our language evaluator for the evening. From him, we learnt some of the causes of the common mispronunciations and a simple exercise on how to include that all important ‘h’ sound in words beginning with ‘th’:
Practice by repeating the following words:
Thief
Third
Through
Three
Winners for the night
Table Topics: Lisa
Best Prepared Speech: Hrydhal Damani, Clarence Lee
Best Evaluation: Ernest Chen
Finally, our Club President closed the meeting with a challenge to the guests to take the first step and a reminder to members to make full use of your time with Toastmasters to reap the benefits and to enjoy the journey.
