Toastmasters Club of Singapore

Better Listening, Thinking and Speaking (Club 80-357)

IT’S TOUGH TO BE FUNNY BUT WE DID IT!

23rd August 2010

August 16, 7pm  at the Diamond Room at Sheraton Towers Hotel:  a day that some of us at TMCS were dreading and yet looking forward to, in excited anticipation.  Yes…it was the day of our Annual Humourous Speech and Evaluation contest.

The challenge was to deliver an original humorous speech of 5-7 minutes and make the audience laugh, laugh and laugh some more!  The more laughter a speaker generates with every punchline delivered, the higher the chances of winning.

Seven brave souls – none are stand-up comedians – took up this challenge.  They were Leow Sue Yen, Elsa Lim, Avi Liran, Ernest Chen, Saravanan, Manoj Vasudevan and Oh Hock Chong.  Their speeches sure kept the audience in stitches….

They laughed at Sue Yen’s description of our local habits of queuing and “table reservations by tissue paper”.   Elsa’s speech of “Missing the Boat” tickled when she described her fruitless attempts at fishing for boyfriends.   Jewish mothers and the habits of Jewish cab drivers came to life in Avi’s speech.  Hock Chong evoked the smells and sights of the toilets of his youth;  Ernest recounted how he “bartered” his wife in exchange for a hotel room and Manoj generated waves of laughter when he gave the audience tips on how to lie convincingly and go to heaven.

After a short break, the audience came back for more  - this time it was the Evaluation Contest which attracted 8 contestants: Lee Wei Ching, Dev Raj, YY Lee, Ng Cher Khim, Oh Hock Cong, Ernest Chen and Elsa Lim.

Test Speaker Sean Loke for SIM Toastmasters delivered a dynamically humorous speech on “The Joys of Falling Down” and each contestant were given 2-3 minutes to deliver their evaluations.

Time flew and the before we knew it, our laugh-a-minute Chapter Meeting had come to an end.  The verdict:  Champion of Humorous Prepared Speech -  Manoj Vasudevan; First Runner-up – Ernest Chen; 2nd Runner Up – Elsa Lim.

Champion of Evaluation Contest – Ng Cher Khim;  First Runner-up – Ernest Chen; Second Runner-up – Elsa Lim.

Congratulations to all our winners!  It’s now on to the Area and hopefully, the Division Contests for our champions Manoj, Ernest and Cher Khim.

TMCS presents LAW & ORDER - Murder of Mr. Ken Nott Make-It!

29th July 2010

Introduction
We have decided to introduce a MOCK TRIAL in place of Table Topics Session for TMCS meeting this Monday (2 August 2010)! We NEED YOU. Yes, we NEED YOU to volunteer as one of the seven main characters in this mock trial! The seven characters are:

1) Ms. Mar Ree Ya (Mr. Make-It’s household maid, 21 years old)
2) Mr. Steve Brawn (Gardener/ Mrs. Zsa Zsa Make-It’s toy-boy, 17 years old)
3) Mrs. Zsa Zsa Make-It (Mr. Make-It’s trophy wife, 30 years old)
4) Ms. Chio Bu (Mr. Make-It’s personal secretary, 18 years old)
5) Mr. Ding Dong Dong (Mr. Make-It’s business partner, 79 years old)
6) Chief Prosecutor
7) Defence counsels, Mr. and Mrs. Ken U. Paymi (only one volunteer is required here)

Don’t worry if you do not know the finer details of trial. You won’t need any legal knowledge for the mock trial anyway! You just need to be creative:) You need to sign up by this Friday (30 August) 10.30pm. Details of the sign-up are at the bottom of this email.

Synopsis
You are a citizen of the State of Roswell. Roswell is a small and sunny island State of about five thousand inhabitants in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The majority of the population are wealthy businessmen, who largely made their wealth selling Lehman Mini-bonds to the rest of the world and subsequently decided to settle down in Roswell.

Roswellians adopt the “devil-may-care” attitude in their lives and they often host wild crazy parties throughout the year. Still, scandals are usually hushed up unless they are particularly outrageous. On 1st July 2010, the Roswellians were shocked to hear the news that Mr. Ken Nott Make-It was brutally murdered at his residence the evening before. Wikileaks posted a copy of the Roswell Police Incident Report on their website and it read as follows:-

At 8am 1st July 2010, we attended to a 911 call at Mr. Ken Nott Make-It (80 years old). When we arrived, Ms. Mar Ree Ya – the maid (21 years old) – was waiting for us. Although she was in a state of shock, she calmly told us what she discovered. She had entered Mr. Make-it’s room in the morning with the breakfast tray. The bedroom door was unlocked as usual. She discovered Mr. Make-It lying dead on his bed, with his head completely smashed. She then went to do some yoga exercises before calling the police…..

Subsequently, the Roswell Police issued a statement, condemning the leaks as being “prejudicial to State security.” Nevertheless, the police announced that they had arrested five suspects. The five accused were Ms. Mar Ree Ya, Mr. Steve Brawn, Mrs. Zsa Zsa Make-It, Ms. Chio Bu, and Mr. Ding Dong Dong. In view of the publicity, Roswell Chief Prosecutor quickly expedited the trial and pushed for an open court hearing. All five accused hired Roswell’s most infamous defence counsels, Mr. and Mrs. Ken U. Paymi, to defend them.

You will attend the trial of the five accused in Roswell High Court. Similar to the United States of America judicial system, the court conducts the criminal trial with the judge, prosecutor, and defence counsel. Each accused will be allowed to speak for two minutes on the stand. Roswell Chief Prosecutor will then question the accused for one minute, before the defence counsel is allowed to re-examine the accused and clarify any doubts with the accused. But the jury of seven good men and women decides the fate of the accused.

Confidential information:
We will provide confidential information for the volunteers separately.

Procedure:
1) Table topics master introduces the facts of case and characters and explains procedures & rules - 1 min 30 sec
2) Accused’s Testimony - 2 min each (there are five accused in this case)
3) Cross Examination of Above by Chief Prosecutor -  1 min each for each accused
4) Re-Examination of Above by Defence Lawyer - 1 min each for each accused
(objections not allowed because it is hard to question and obtain an answer within one minute even with the objections)
5) Seven lucky members of our audience will act as members of the jury and discuss the verdict outside the court room - guilty or not guilty.
6) Jury returns from deliberation. Table topics master will announce the result.  A representative of the jury will then give the reasons behind the jury’s verdict.  Event will end with a request for feedback!
7) Voting for best table topics speaker (all the accused, chief prosecutor, and defence lawyer)

Deadline:

The deadline to reply is FRIDAY 30 July 10.30pm. Drop Benson or VPE Muthu or TMCS googlegroups an email, announcing your intentions. Should you have any doubts, please feel free to voice them to Benson.

SO HURRY UP AND SIGN UP AS A ROLE-PLAYING CHARACTER TODAY!
